Battery insight for macOS

Find what drains your Mac battery.

A closed lid shouldn't leave you guessing. Understand sleep drain, find demanding apps, and take control of what happens next.

For macOS 14 and later. Preparing for launch.

WattGuard.

Stop guessing.

See what kept it awake.

Understand what happens between closing the lid and opening it again.

Less guessing. A clearer picture.

Battery drain has more than one story. WattGuard brings sleep history, app activity and power controls into one Mac utility.

Did your Mac actually stay asleep?

See when your Mac slept, when it woke, and how its battery changed. Compare a troublesome night with your Mac's usual sleep behaviour.

  • Review sleep, wake and background wake events.
  • Inspect apps and processes that held sleep-preventing requests.
  • Compare a follow-up sleep session after changing a setting.

Wake events are diagnostic clues. They don't always identify one app as the cause of battery drain.

Understand sleep

An example of what to investigate

  1. Lid closed
  2. Mac enters sleep
  3. Background wake
  4. Morning check

Look at battery change alongside wake activity, then check the evidence.

Follow the activity

CPU activityWakeupsDisk activity
Estimated app impact

Several signals. One place to investigate.

See beyond the battery percentage.

Find apps and their helper processes with the highest estimated impact. CPU activity, wakeups and disk work give you somewhere useful to start.

  • See related processes grouped under their app.
  • Explore activity across different time periods.
  • Inspect a process before deciding what to do.

Impact scores are diagnostic estimates, not exact per-app battery consumption.

Find demanding apps

Put your power routine on repeat.

Build rules around a schedule, sleep and power conditions. Choose actions deliberately, with setup and permissions appropriate to your edition.

WhenYour Mac goes to sleep
IfIt is running on battery
ThenTurn off selected wireless connections

Restore their previous state when the rule ends.

Start with the change you can explain.

Use sleep analysis to choose a setting, try a rule, then review the next sleep session. Build a routine around evidence from your own Mac.

Example rule. Wi-Fi control requires setup. Store Bluetooth automation uses scripts and Shortcuts; Full controls Bluetooth directly. WattGuard must be running.

Choose what happens

Built to stay out of your way.

At home on your Mac

A native menu bar utility, built with Swift and SwiftUI for macOS 14 and later.

Diagnostics on your device

Process and sleep analysis run on your Mac. Purchase verification and activation may require an internet connection.

Actions you choose

Inspect the evidence, choose your rules and grant the permissions they need. Setup requirements are explained before use.

A few things worth knowing.

Why does my MacBook battery drain while sleeping?

A Mac can wake in the background, and apps or services can prevent normal sleep. Battery condition and connected devices can also matter. WattGuard helps you inspect sleep and wake history and battery changes so you can investigate your own Mac instead of applying every fix at once.

How can I see which apps are draining my Mac battery?

Start with the Energy tab in Activity Monitor. WattGuard adds grouped app and helper-process activity, time-period views and an estimated impact score based on CPU activity, wakeups and disk work. An impact score is a clue, not an exact percentage of battery consumed by an app.

Does WattGuard stop all overnight battery drain?

No utility can guarantee that. WattGuard helps you understand unusual drain, choose supported actions and compare the next sleep session. Results depend on the cause, your Mac, macOS and the settings you choose.

Can it turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when my Mac sleeps?

WattGuard supports wireless-control actions in sleep and schedule rules. In the Store edition, Bluetooth automation uses user-installed scripts and Shortcuts; Full controls Bluetooth directly, subject to macOS access and licence activation. WattGuard must stay running. Rules can restore the original connection states when their conditions end.

Is this a battery charge limiter?

WattGuard focuses on understanding battery use, sleep and app activity. It also exposes battery information and supported power controls. Availability depends on macOS and your hardware; it does not unlock unsupported charging controls.

What does WattGuard cost, and where can I download it?

The release is being prepared. Final pricing, the Mac App Store listing and direct-download details are not available yet. They will be published on this page once confirmed.
